About the Course

Integrated study of interpersonal skills as key to the process of collaborative leadership; focus is on the development of professional oral communication skills (i.e., conveying meaning through words, visual aids and non-verbal elements) and the understanding of the role interpersonal and oral communication skills play in areas such as leadership development, professionalism, conflict resolution, interviewing, team building, and ethics. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Collaborative leadership is the process through which leaders, guided by self-knowledge and interpersonal awareness, facilitate and empower the potential of diverse individuals and groups through enhanced understanding of factors such as individual motivation, interpersonal skills, and group dynamics.

EDPS 31500 is one of three courses that make up the Certificate in Collaborative Leadership (CCL) available to all Purdue undergraduate students.  The other two courses are EDPS 316 Collaborative Leadership: Cross-Cultural Settings and EDPS 317 Collaborative Leadership: Mentoring. 

Course Goals/Learning Objectives

Identify the essential elements of collaborative leadership.

Explain the importance of interpersonal and oral communication skills to the process of collaborative leadership.

Understand how interpersonal and oral communication skills interact with thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Explain the importance of interpersonal skills in the understanding basic human motivation.

Demonstrate solid interpersonal and oral communication skills in class presentations; skills related to initiating and sustaining positive and collegial relationships, engaging in difficult conversations, and conveying meaning. 

Display the interpersonal skills of listening, paraphrasing, open-ended questions, and reflecting feeling.   

Use appropriate organizational patterns.

Use thoughtful, effective, and appropriate language.

Use appropriate delivery techniques. (e.g., posture, gestures, eye contact, paralanguage)

Use supporting materials to reinforce messages.

Communicate a central measure with support materials.

EDPS 31500 Collaborative Leadership: Interpersonal Skills

Description
Credit Hours: 3.00. The purpose of this course is to provide integrated study of listening as a collaborative leadership skill necessary for interpersonal and intrapersonal development. Focus is on the development of professional listening skills, and the understand of the role listening plays in collaborative leadership conflict resolution, interviewing, team building, and ethics. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer.
