About the Course
What is nation-building? Why does the West intervene to nation-build? What are the lessons learned? How can other states sabotage Western efforts? In this class, we will discuss these questions and more, with respect to Western nation-building from the Balkans to the Middle East. The focus will be on US, EU, and UN nation-building. We will debate the extent to which the West should be engaged in nation-building abroad with emphasis on political, security, ideological and ethical dilemmas of intervention. Also, we will extensively analyze the successes and failures, and their implications for the Western foreign policies.  
 
Course Goals/Learning Objectives

  1. Practical Understanding of Nation-Building and Third-Party Military Intervention

  2. Research on Nation-Building and Military/Peace Operations Issues

  3. Writing and Discussion on these issues
