About the Course
At the end of Com 114, students will be able to:
  • Employ effective verbal and nonverbal delivery techniques while delivering a presentation.
  • Conduct an audience analysis and use the information to adapt messages delivered during a formal presentation.
  • Utilize effective organizational strategies for informational and persuasive presentations by drafting and delivering presentations.
  • Find and incorporate supporting evidence to increase the effectiveness and credibility of the messages delivered in informational and persuasive presentations. 
Course Goals/Learning Objectives
  1. As a result of classroom learning and speaking experience, you will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and skill in the following areas:
    1. Audience analysis

    4. Support and evidence
    5. Persuasive and informative strategies
    6. Verbal and non-verbal delivery skills

2.   When creating and delivering a presentation, you should be able to:
  1. select an appropriate topic
  2. outline a presentation
  3. provide appropriate transitions and summaries
  4. develop effective introductions and conclusions
  5. use an appropriate organizational pattern
  6. use supporting material properly and effectively
  7. create effective presentational aids
  8. use presentational aids effectively
  9. display appropriate verbal and nonverbal behaviors
  10. create effective asynchronous and synchronous presentations
  11. tell a story extemporaneously
The assignments in this class are designed to achieve these goals. Textbook readings, class discussions, in class activities, and presentations will not only provide you with information about major concepts, but will also allow you the opportunity to experience the concepts. Therefore, your attendance and participation in class are of the utmost importance.

Credit Hours: 3.00. A study of communication theories as applied to speech; practical communicative experiences ranging from interpersonal communication and small group process through problem identification and solution in discussion to informative and persuasive speaking in standard speaker-audience situations.
