About the Course
COM 217 is a course that is designed to equip you with skills to help you more effectively express your ideas and research through both the written and spoken word. The information you present in this course will be largely based on your experiences in various scientific areas of inquiry. Given that many of you will have careers in the sciences, it is imperative that you are able to effectively communicate complex, scientific information to all types of audiences. This course will require you to prepare and deliver a number of presentations, as well as turn in several research-based writing assignments. These written assignments, combined with the presentations, will make up the majority of your grade. Additionally, you will participate in class on a regular basis to earn points that will comprise the remainder of your grade. These activities may include quizzes, impromptu speeches, individual activities, group activities, take-home assignments, etc.
Course Goals/Learning Objectives
You should be able to effectively communicate scientific and technical information to a variety of audiences. Toward this end, you will learn principles of communication theory and specific communication skill sets, and how to apply that knowledge toward the practical management of written and oral communication situations. The specific learning objectives for this course are:
  1. Students will effectively communicate scientific and technical information to a variety of audiences through oral presentations of various types.
  2. Students will effectively communicate scientific and technical information to a variety of audiences through different types of written documents.
  3. Students will find, assess and communicate the research in the scientific and technology literatures.
In order to achieve these objectives, you will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and skill in the following areas: Audience analysis, Topic analysis, Organizational skills, Information Literacy, Persuasive and informative strategies, Verbal and non-verbal delivery skills, Group Communication Skills, Use of effective visual aids, Evaluation of research and supporting material, Preparing and editing research reports.
